Migraine Q & A

Why do I have migraines?

Migraines aren’t well understood and their causes are continuously being studied through clinical evaluations, but many medical experts believe that migraines develop from changes in your brain stem’s interactions with your trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway.

Some medical experts also believe that migraine attacks occur as a result of low levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters that play roles in pain sensations. For some migraine sufferers, attacks are triggered by:

  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Food additives
  • Intense physical exertion
  • Changes in barometric pressure
  • Alcohol or caffeinated beverages

You could even be prone to migraine attacks if they run in your family.

What are the symptoms of migraines?

Migraines generally progress through a series of stages, over the course of several hours or days. Usually the day or two before your migraine starts, you notice subtle changes, like frequent yawning, mood changes, or neck stiffness. This is known as the prodrome stage.

As your migraine shifts into the aura stage, it’s common to experience visual disturbances, sensitivity to light, or pins and needles in your extremities. During the migraine attack stage, you could experience:

  • Pain on one side of your head
  • Extreme sensitivity to smells and lights
  • Blurred vision or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or vomiting

These symptoms can last up to 72 hours if left untreated before you fall into the final phase, which is called the postdrome stage. This is where your migraine tapers down and you might feel moody, confused, or dizzy.

How are migraines treated?

Dr. Nelson and the team at Root Medical can provide treatment if you’re currently having a migraine attack. Plus, they work to prevent the onset of future migraines or at least decrease their severity.

Because some migraine attacks could stem from pressure on nerves, realigning your spine through manual chiropractic adjustments can relieve the tension that causes debilitating migraine pain. Your whole-body biomechanical migraine treatment plan may also include:

  • Specialized neck strengthening exercises
  • Ultrasound or electrical stimulation therapy
  • Medical-grade nutritional supplements
  • Hydration and IV supplementation

Dr. Nelson and his team strive to improve your migraine pain, starting with your very first session. Call Root Medical or book an appointment online to find relief for your migraine pain today.
